Testing Accuracy

Use the following procedure to test the accuracy of your level:

IMPORTANT: make sure that the working edges of the level and the surface you are using are completely free of any foreign material or debris.

For the Level vials:

  • 1) Place the level on a flat horizontal surface
  • 2) Note the position of the bubble and mark the position of the level on the surface
  • 3) Reverse the level, end for end, making sure the leveling surface is down. Place it in exactly the same position as marked in Step 2.
  • 4) If bubble rests in the same position as noted in Step 2 the level is true.

For the Plumb vials:

  • 1) Place the working edge of the level on a flat vertical surface
  • 2) Note the position of the bubble and mark the position of the level on the surface
  • 3) Reverse the level, working edge for working edge and place in exactly the same position as marked in Step 2.
  • 4) If bubble rests in the same position as noted in Step 2 the level is true.

Johnson levels will hold true unless the actual frame is bent, twisted or otherwise damaged. Once this happens the level is usually unrepairable.

We do not offer any repair service for our spirit levels. Almost all our level models feature easily replacable vial and vial cover assemblies which we will be happy to send free of charge.
